Thu Jan 30 03:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Bengaluru’s Iconic Russell Market Set for ₹40 Crore Restoration

**Bengaluru, January 30, 2025** – Bengaluru’s historic Russell Market, a landmark since 1927, is slated for a major ₹40 crore restoration project. Years of neglect, a devastating 2012 fire, and general wear and tear have left the market in disrepair, impacting foot traffic and business.

The renovation, spearheaded by the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) and Shivajinagar MLA Rizwan Arshad, will preserve the market’s heritage architecture while adding modern amenities. A multi-story building with parking, lifts, and cold storage will be constructed behind the existing structure. The project aims to be completed by 2027, marking the market’s centenary.

Before work begins, the BBMP will issue vending certificates to approximately 475 vendors to verify their legitimacy and tenure. MLA Arshad assures that vendors will be temporarily relocated during the restoration of the main heritage building, which will see only necessary repairs, including a new roof.

While some vendors expressed enthusiasm about the much-needed improvements, others voiced concerns about the relocation process and lack of prior notification. The General Secretary of the Russell Market Traders’ Association highlighted the current lack of parking as a major deterrent to customers and expressed hope that the new facilities will revive the market’s former vibrancy, including the resumption of traditional market events and shows. The tender for the Detailed Project Report (DPR) has been floated, and construction is expected to begin by the end of the year.
