Thu Jan 30 23:09:21 IST 2025: ## Telangana Raises Retirement Age for State University Professors
**Hyderabad, January 31, 2025** – The Telangana government has raised the retirement age for professors in state universities from 60 to 65 years, effective January 28th. This decision, recommended by the Telangana Council of Higher Education (TGCHE), aims to address a critical shortage of faculty and safeguard the quality of teaching and research.
According to TGCHE Chairman Balakista Reddy, the lack of recruitment since 2013 has led to a significant decline in faculty numbers, impacting both teaching standards and university rankings in national and international accreditations. He stated that retaining experienced professors is crucial, and that this measure aligns with a national trend, noting that 18 other states have already adopted a similar increase in retirement age, following UGC suggestions.
The move is expected to benefit approximately 200 professors scheduled to retire within the next five years. The government clarified that this extension will not affect new recruitments, as it only extends the service of existing faculty members.
