Thu Jan 30 06:10:55 UTC 2025: ## OpenAI CEO Sam Altman to Visit India Amidst Legal Challenges

**NEW DELHI, January 30, 2025** – Sam Altman, CEO of Microsoft-backed OpenAI, is reportedly planning a trip to India next week, marking his first visit in two years. Sources indicate a meeting with government officials is a possibility, though the schedule remains tentative. This visit comes at a time when OpenAI faces multiple legal challenges in India.

A lawsuit alleging copyright infringement was filed last year by the Associated News of India (ANI), and has since been joined by numerous book publishers and digital media outlets, including those owned by prominent Indian billionaires. OpenAI contends that it only uses publicly available data under fair use principles and disputes the Indian court’s jurisdiction.

The planned visit follows Altman’s 2023 meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi, where they discussed AI’s potential for India’s tech sector. India is OpenAI’s second-largest market after the United States. The timing of the visit is also noteworthy given the recent global tech market shakeup triggered by the rise of Chinese AI competitor DeepSeek, whose AI Assistant has surpassed ChatGPT in US App Store rankings. OpenAI, the Indian IT Ministry, and Prime Minister Modi’s office have not yet commented on the planned trip.
