Thu Jan 30 15:51:30 UTC 2025: ## Mahatma Gandhi’s Assassination Remembered on 77th Punyatithi

**New Delhi, January 30, 2025** – India today marks the 77th anniversary of the assassination of Mahatma Gandhi, a day remembered as Martyrs’ Day. On January 30, 1948, Gandhi was fatally shot by Nathuram Godse at Birla House (now Gandhi Smriti) in New Delhi during evening prayers.

The assassination, a tragic event in Indian history, followed a period of intense communal violence after India’s partition. Gandhi, a staunch advocate for Hindu-Muslim unity, had proposed significant financial aid to Pakistan in an attempt to foster peace. This decision, along with his philosophy of non-violence, was opposed by Godse and his associates, who believed it weakened India.

At approximately 5:17 PM, while Gandhi was attending his daily prayer meeting, Godse approached him under the guise of paying respects. He then fired three bullets from a Beretta M1934 pistol, striking Gandhi in the chest and abdomen. Gandhi’s last words were reportedly “Hey Ram.” He was pronounced dead shortly after. Godse was apprehended at the scene and later executed. The nation continues to mourn the loss of its beloved leader and remember his unwavering commitment to peace and justice.
