**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India** – A stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, during the Mauni Amavasya bathing festival, has resulted in the deaths of at least 30 people and injured 60 more, according to officials. The incident occurred due to overcrowding at the Sangam confluence.
DIG Maha Kumbh Vaibhav Krishna confirmed the casualties, stating that 25 of the deceased have been identified, with victims hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Assam, and Gujarat. While authorities claim no serious injuries remain, a steady stream of wounded pilgrims continues to arrive at the overwhelmed central medical facility, which has been converted into a makeshift field hospital. Access to the hospital has been restricted to media.
OOSD Maha Kumbh Mela Akanksha Rana attributed the tragedy to excessive crowd pressure at the Sangam. However, criticism has mounted regarding the inadequate crowd management. Samajwadi Party MP, Ikra Hasan, blamed poor arrangements and a VIP culture for the tragedy. Dimple Yadav expressed condolences and called for increased compensation for the affected families.
A commission has been formed to investigate the incident. Headed by former judge Harsh Kumar, along with former IAS officer D.K. Singh and former IPS officer V.K. Gupta, the commission commenced work today and will submit its report within a month. The commission plans to visit Prayagraj tomorrow.
Adding to the chaos, a major fire broke out in Sector 22 at the Nageshwar Pandal near Chhatnang Ghat in the Jhusi area. While causing significant property damage (estimated in lakhs of rupees), thankfully, no casualties were reported thanks to the swift response of the fire brigade.
Uttar Pradesh DGP Prashant Kumar, Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Singh, and other senior officials visited the site to assess the situation. The incident has sparked widespread outrage and calls for improved safety measures at future religious gatherings.
