Thu Jan 30 00:07:13 IST 2025: ## Rwanda-backed Rebels Seize Control of Goma, Congo’s Largest Eastern City
**Goma, Democratic Republic of Congo (January 30, 2025)** – The M23 rebel group, backed by Rwanda according to UN experts, has captured a significant portion of Goma, the largest city in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), including the airport. This escalation in the decades-long conflict has sent thousands fleeing and sparked international condemnation.
While pockets of Goma remain under government control, residents reported M23 dominance over much of the city following a weeks-long advance culminating in Monday’s seizure. The rebels, one of numerous armed groups vying for control in the mineral-rich region, clashed with Congolese forces, leaving casualties and further displacing hundreds of thousands.
The UN expressed concerns about the deteriorating security situation and the risk of lawlessness. UN spokesperson Stephane Dujarric highlighted the proliferation of weapons within the city.
International pressure is mounting for a ceasefire. Rwandan President Paul Kagame, despite denials of supporting the M23, engaged in discussions with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on this matter. The East African Community, including both Rwanda and Congo, is scheduled to hold a virtual summit to address the crisis, although Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi will be unable to attend. Pope Francis also issued a plea for an end to the violence and protection of civilians.
The M23, primarily composed of ethnic Tutsis, stated its intention to establish an administration in Goma to facilitate the return of displaced people and a semblance of normalcy. However, analysts warn that securing a rebel withdrawal may prove significantly more challenging than in 2012, citing increased M23 boldness fueled by Rwandan support and perceived Congolese disregard for previous peace agreements. The conflict’s root causes, including accusations of Congolese involvement with Hutu rebels implicated in the 1994 Rwandan genocide, remain central to the ongoing tensions.
