**Washington, D.C. –** A catastrophic mid-air collision between an American Eagle regional jet and a U.S. Army Black Hawk helicopter near Reagan National Airport has left scores feared dead. The incident, which occurred Wednesday afternoon, sent the American Airlines flight 5342, carrying 64 passengers and crew, plummeting into the Potomac River. The helicopter, carrying three soldiers, also crashed.
Emergency crews are currently on the scene recovering bodies from the frigid water. The Washington Post reports that multiple bodies have been pulled from the river, and at this time, no survivors have been found. CBS News is reporting at least 18 bodies have been recovered.
American Airlines confirmed on social media that flight 5342, operated by PSA Airlines, was en route from Wichita, Kansas to Washington, D.C. when the incident occurred.
