**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India** – A devastating stampede at the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has claimed the lives of at least 30 pilgrims and injured 60 more. The incident occurred early Wednesday morning at the Sangam Ghat during the Mauni Amavasya, a significant bathing day attracting massive crowds.

The stampede resulted from pilgrims surging forward at the Sangam Ghat, overwhelming barricades set up to manage the flow of devotees to the bathing area designated for Akhadas (religious orders). Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated that pilgrims attempting to bypass barricades caused the crush. He confirmed that four of the deceased were from Karnataka, with additional victims hailing from Assam and Gujarat.

President Ram Nath Kovind and Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed deep grief over the tragedy. PM Modi spoke to CM Adityanath four times to inquire about the situation and expedite rescue efforts. A judicial inquiry has been ordered by the state government, and CM Adityanath announced compensation of ₹25 lakh (approximately $300,000 USD) for the families of each victim.

Initial reports from officials were slow to confirm the casualty count, but by Wednesday evening, authorities confirmed the death toll and number of injured. The chaos left behind a scene of scattered belongings and widespread panic among the remaining pilgrims. Authorities implemented temporary measures to control the flow of pilgrims to the ghats, and special trains to Prayagraj were suspended to prevent further congestion.

The incident highlights the challenges of managing the massive crowds attending the Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings. A judicial commission, headed by a retired judge, has been established to investigate the incident and determine the cause of the stampede and suggest preventative measures for future events. A separate police investigation is also underway. Several state and national leaders expressed their condolences and offered support to the affected families.
