Thu Jan 30 08:01:03 UTC 2025: **Kerala Opposition Leader Rejects IUML’s Stand on Gender Equality**
THIRUVANANTHAPURAM, Kerala – Kerala’s Leader of the Opposition, V.D. Satheesan, has rejected Indian Union Muslim League (IUML) State general secretary P.M.A. Salam’s assertion that gender equality is a misconception. While stating that Mr. Salam is entitled to his opinion, Mr. Satheesan reaffirmed the Congress party’s unwavering commitment to gender justice and equality. This follows Mr. Salam’s controversial statement that the IUML advocates gender justice, not gender equality, a position he clarified in relation to the popular MEC-7 exercise format.
The MEC-7 workout routine, popular in North Kerala, has faced criticism from Muslim religious leaders for allowing men and women to exercise together in public spaces, deemed a violation of Islamic modesty. The BJP has further alleged that MEC-7 is a recruitment tool for radical groups. Despite this controversy, Congress MP K. Sreekandan previously inaugurated a local MEC-7 chapter. While not directly addressing MEC-7, Mr. Satheesan’s statement implicitly supports gender equality in all aspects of life, including fitness activities. The exchange has ignited a heated political and social debate in the state.
