**Trump Administration Renames Gulf of Mexico and Restores Mount McKinley’s Name**

WASHINGTON, D.C. – January 24, 2025 – The Department of the Interior announced today the renaming of the Gulf of Mexico to the Gulf of America and the restoration of the name Mount McKinley to North America’s highest peak. These changes, implemented per a recent executive order from President Donald J. Trump, aim to honor American history and legacy.

The Gulf of Mexico, now the Gulf of America, is being renamed to reflect its significance to the nation’s economy and history, encompassing over 1,700 miles of coastline and nearly 160 million acres. The renaming, according to the DOI, underscores its crucial role in trade, energy production, and maritime industries.

Simultaneously, the name Mount McKinley is being reinstated to North America’s highest peak. The mountain was originally named in honor of President William McKinley in 1917 but was later changed by the Obama administration in 2015. The Trump administration views this restoration as a recognition of McKinley’s contributions to the nation and a correction of a previous “affront” to his legacy.

The U.S. Board on Geographic Names is updating federal databases to reflect these immediate changes. Further information can be found on the U.S. Board on Geographic Names website.
