NEW DELHI, January 30, 2025 – India is nearing the nationwide implementation of its four new Labour Codes, expected to take effect April 1st. A two-day meeting chaired by Union Labour Minister Mansukh Mandaviya reviewed the progress made by states in drafting the necessary rules. Over 32 states and union territories have already pre-published draft rules, with the remaining expected to complete the process by March 31st.
Minister Mandaviya stressed the importance of balancing worker welfare with industrial growth. He also highlighted initiatives like the National Career Service portal and Model Career Centres aimed at improving employment opportunities.
The meeting also focused on addressing the concerns of gig and platform workers. To further streamline the process, the government launched state-specific microsites under the e-Shram initiative, integrating them with a national database for easier registration of unorganized workers. A new Occupational Shortage Index (OSI) was also unveiled, providing data to better match job seekers with available positions. While some trade unions have expressed concerns and threatened strikes, the government has indicated a willingness to continue discussions.
