**Chandigarh, January 30, 2025** – Haryana Chief Minister Nayab Singh Saini on Wednesday directly challenged allegations by the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) that Haryana is poisoning Delhi’s water supply. In a dramatic display, Saini drank water from the Yamuna River at the Delhi-Haryana border, claiming the water meets all standards and accusing AAP of spreading misinformation ahead of the February 5th Delhi Assembly elections.
The controversy began on Monday when AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal alleged that Haryana’s BJP government was deliberately releasing industrial waste into the Yamuna, potentially endangering Delhi residents. Delhi Deputy Chief Minister Atishi echoed these concerns, suggesting a joint visit to the river to test water quality.
Saini responded with a sharp rebuke, calling Kejriwal’s claims “unfortunate” and accusing AAP leaders of being filled with “poison.” He accused Kejriwal of engaging in “politics of lies” to distract from his own failures. Saini also challenged Atishi to join him at the Yamuna river ghat, a challenge she did not accept.
Saini highlighted that the water resource authority had collected samples showing no poison, and reiterated that the water’s quality meets standards where it enters Delhi from Haryana. However, he acknowledged that water quality deteriorates further downstream in areas like Palwal and Faridabad. He also criticized the AAP government for allegedly misusing ₹8,500 crore in central funds allocated for Yamuna river cleaning.
Kejriwal countered Saini’s actions, claiming the Chief Minister only pretended to drink the water and then spat it out. He reiterated his concerns about ammonia contamination and insisted he would not allow Delhi residents to consume potentially hazardous water. The exchange highlights a significant political battle as the Delhi elections approach.
