**New Delhi, India** – The 76th Republic Day celebrations culminated Wednesday evening with a mesmerizing Beating Retreat ceremony at Vijay Chowk. Against the stunning backdrop of the setting sun over Raisina Hills, a massed band of the Indian Army, Navy, Air Force, and Central Armed Police Forces performed 30 captivating musical pieces for a distinguished audience including President Droupadi Murmu, Vice-President Jagdeep Dhankhar, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Defence Minister Rajnath Singh.
President Murmu’s arrival in a traditional gold-plated buggy was met with enthusiastic cheers from the crowd. The ceremony, conducted by Commander Manoj Sebastian, featured a diverse repertoire of patriotic and traditional tunes. Highlights included the playing of “Kadam Kadam Badhaye Ja,” “Aye Watan Tere Liye,” “Ganga Jamuna,” and “Bharat Ke Jawan,” among others. Each service branch showcased its own unique musical selections, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of India. The event concluded with the stirring rendition of “Sare Jahan Se Acha” played by the Buglers.
The Beating Retreat, a centuries-old military tradition signifying the end of the day’s activities, was first held in India in 1955 during the state visit of Queen Elizabeth II. Conceived by Major GA Roberts and commissioned by Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, it has since become an annual highlight of Republic Day celebrations.
