Wed Jan 29 17:50:39 UTC 2025: ## Egypt Rejects US Proposal to Relocate Gaza Residents
**CAIRO** – Egyptian President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi has firmly rejected a US proposal to relocate Palestinians from the Gaza Strip to Egypt and Jordan, calling the idea an “injustice” that his country will not participate in. His statement comes after US President Donald Trump reiterated his call for Arab nations to accept Gaza residents, suggesting a potential temporary or permanent relocation.
El-Sisi stated that the displacement of Palestinians is unacceptable and would negatively impact Egypt’s national security. He made these comments during a press conference on Wednesday, days after Trump’s renewed proposal. The US president’s plan, which aims to “clean out” Gaza, has been met with widespread opposition from Palestinians and regional countries alike.
Jordan’s Foreign Minister Ayman Safadi also rejected the plan, emphasizing that Jordan is for Jordanians and Palestine for Palestinians. The proposal is seen as undermining the possibility of a Palestinian state and potentially destabilizing the Middle East.
El-Sisi reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to a two-state solution for the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, emphasizing that the solution lies in the establishment of a Palestinian state, not the displacement of its people. The Egyptian president confirmed his government’s intention to work with the US administration to achieve this goal.
The proposal echoes historical concerns about Palestinian displacement, raising fears of a repeat of the 1948 Nakba, where hundreds of thousands of Palestinians were forcibly displaced. Egypt and Jordan, both US allies and recipients of substantial US aid, fear that the permanent displacement of Gaza’s population would hinder the realization of a future Palestinian state. Despite the US’s recent exemption of its $1.3 billion annual military assistance to Egypt from a global aid freeze, the Egyptian government remains steadfast in its rejection of the relocation plan.
