Thu Jan 30 18:18:31 IST 2025: ## Tirunelveli Corporation Councillors Criticize Officials for Avoiding Public Meetings
**TIRUNELVELI, January 30, 2025** – A heated Tirunelveli Corporation council meeting saw cross-party criticism of senior officials for allegedly avoiding weekly grievance redressal meetings. Councillors from the DMK and AIADMK accused the officials of neglecting their duty to directly address public concerns, instead sending junior staff to the meetings.
DMK Councillor P. Subramanian stated that senior officials were unwilling to engage directly with the public, hindering effective problem-solving. This sentiment was echoed by fellow DMK Councillor Wilson Mani Durai, who highlighted the inadequacy of responses provided by lower-level officials.
The meeting also saw concerns raised about slow progress on the underground drainage scheme, with councillors noting blocked drainage and sluggish repair work. Questions about the Murappanadu Combined Drinking Water Scheme elicited a response from Commissioner N.O. Sukhaputra, who promised the project would commence soon.
Further issues discussed included insufficient water supply to mosques during Ramzan, the need for impartial encroachment removal along the Tamirabharani watercourse, filling vacant positions within the Corporation, and the underperformance of subsidized ‘Amma Unavagam’ canteens. The Mayor assured councillors that these matters were being addressed. Finally, the council also discussed implementing measures to control the stray dog population.
