Thu Jan 30 12:00:00 UTC 2025: ## Tigers Continue Roster Overhaul, Eye Bregman Amidst Bullpen and Lineup Upgrades

**Lakeland, FL** – Detroit Tigers president of baseball operations Scott Harris announced Wednesday that the team’s offseason roster shakeup is far from over. Despite already signing free agents Alex Cobb, Gleyber Torres, and Tommy Kahnle (a one-year, $7.75 million deal), Harris confirmed the Tigers are actively pursuing further improvements to both their bullpen and lineup before the March 27th opening day.

A key target is free agent third baseman Alex Bregman, though securing his services may require a long-term contract commitment. The Tigers face competition from at least four other teams for Bregman, whose acquisition would bolster a lineup currently projected to start Jace Jung at third. The team also remains interested in relievers Kenley Jansen and Kyle Finnegan to add experienced closing talent to their bullpen, which currently includes Kahnle, Jason Foley, Tyler Holton, Beau Brieske, and Will Vest. While Kahnle is seen as a valuable addition due to his high strikeout rate, Harris stopped short of naming him the closer.

While Harris highlighted the need for bullpen and lineup enhancements, he indicated the starting rotation is largely set, echoing December comments from general manager Jeff Greenberg. The Tigers currently have four rotation spots filled by Cobb, Tarik Skubal, Reese Olson, and Jackson Jobe, leaving one open spot to be filled from amongst Casey Mize, Kenta Maeda, Keider Montero, Brant Hurter, and Matt Manning. The possibility of re-signing free agent Jack Flaherty remains unconfirmed by Harris, although he expressed his positive feelings towards the pitcher.

The signing of Kahnle resulted in the designation for assignment of Alex Faedo, who is out of minor league options. Harris stated this was an unfortunate but necessary move due to the increasing talent on the Tigers’ 40-man roster.

The Tigers are exploring all avenues – free agency, trades, and waiver claims – to enhance their roster before spring training games begin on February 22nd against the Philadelphia Phillies. Harris emphasized the team’s existing depth but remains committed to building a stronger, more competitive team for the 2025 season.
