Thu Jan 30 23:33:13 IST 2025: **Bharathiar University’s Syllabus Snafu Leaves Students in the Lurch**
COIMBATORE, January 30, 2025 – A communication breakdown at Bharathiar University (BU) has caused significant disruption for students and faculty, forcing a two-month long use of new syllabi before a reversion back to the old ones. The issue, raised by college principals at a Senate meeting on Wednesday, highlights a major administrative lapse.
Affiliated colleges initially adopted new syllabi for various subjects, only to be instructed to revert to the old ones two months later. This occurred despite the Boards of Studies circulating the new syllabi in advance, at the colleges’ request. The university’s justification – that colleges should have assumed the old syllabi remained valid until the new ones were officially uploaded to the website – has been met with criticism.
The unexpected switch caused significant hardship, requiring teachers to hold extra classes and students to cram revised content. Computer Science, Mathematics, and Commerce students were the most affected by the substantial changes in the new syllabi. Principals and faculty voiced concerns that the confusion was entirely avoidable and ultimately harms students facing a competitive job market.
While the Commissioner of Technical Education, T. Abraham, promised to prevent similar issues in the future, the incident underscores a significant administrative failure within BU, leaving students with a compromised learning experience.
