Thu Jan 30 09:06:14 IST 2025: ## Canada Report Contradicts Trudeau’s Claim of Indian Involvement in Sikh Activist’s Killing

**Ottawa, January 30, 2025** – A Canadian commission report has refuted Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s assertion that Indian agents were involved in the killing of Sikh activist Hardeep Singh Nijjar. Released Tuesday, the “Public Inquiry Into Foreign Interference in Federal Electoral Processes and Democratic Institutions” found no definitive link between a foreign state and Nijjar’s murder, despite Trudeau’s September 2023 claim of credible evidence implicating India.

While the report acknowledged a potential Indian disinformation campaign following Trudeau’s announcement, it stopped short of definitively linking India to the assassination. The report also noted Canada’s expulsion of six Indian diplomats in October 2024, citing a targeted campaign against Canadian citizens linked to the Indian government. India retaliated with a similar expulsion of Canadian diplomats and withdrew its high commissioner.

The report, however, did suggest India’s possible involvement in spreading disinformation regarding Nijjar’s death. This revelation further strained already tense relations between India and Canada, which deteriorated significantly after Trudeau’s initial allegations. India vehemently rejected the report’s insinuations, accusing Canada of consistent interference in its internal affairs and highlighting Canada’s perceived leniency towards the Khalistan movement, banned in India but supported by sections of the Sikh diaspora in Canada. The 123-page report also detailed the strained relationship between the two countries, stemming from the assassination of Hardeep Singh Nijjar in June 2023. The ongoing fallout from this report is expected to further complicate the relationship between the two nations.
