JUBA, South Sudan (The Hindu) – A chartered plane crashed in South Sudan on Wednesday, killing at least 18 people. The aircraft, operated by Chinese oil firm Greater Pioneer Operating Co., was carrying 21 passengers and crew, including two pilots, when it went down near an oil field in Unity state. The plane was attempting to take off for Juba International Airport when the accident occurred.

The cause of the crash remains under investigation. Local media reports indicate that the victims were primarily oil workers. Gatwech Bipal, Unity state’s Minister of Information, confirmed the casualties and the details of the flight.
