**NEW DELHI** – Delhi Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal has submitted a 14-page letter to the Election Commission of India (ECI) defending his earlier claim that Haryana is polluting the Yamuna River, a crucial source of Delhi’s drinking water. The letter cites Delhi Jal Board data showing high ammonia levels rendering water treatment plants less effective. Kejriwal maintains that Delhi, as a downstream state, relies on Haryana for raw water and that the current contamination poses a serious health risk.
Kejriwal’s initial allegation, made days before the Delhi assembly elections, accused the BJP of deliberately poisoning the water supply to create chaos and blame his Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) government. This claim drew immediate criticism from the BJP and the ECI, who demanded evidence and warned against statements that could incite unrest.
In his letter, Kejriwal insists his actions did not violate any laws and pleads with the ECI to intervene, urging them to direct Haryana to ensure a safe water supply for Delhi residents.
The BJP has accused Kejriwal of lying, while Congress leader Rahul Gandhi highlighted Kejriwal’s past pronouncements about the Yamuna’s purity. Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar further countered the allegations by sharing a video of himself drinking Yamuna river water near the Haryana-Delhi border. He challenged AAP leader Atishi to do the same, attributing the AAP’s claims to fabrication. The political sparring continues as the controversy surrounding the Yamuna’s pollution and its impact on Delhi’s water supply remains a central point of contention.
