Wed Jan 29 14:57:40 IST 2025: ## Parliament Panel Approves Controversial Changes to Waqf Bill Amid Opposition Outcry
**New Delhi** – The Joint Committee of Parliament (JCP) has approved significant amendments to the Waqf (Amendment) Bill, 2024, sparking strong opposition from minority parties. While the committee accepted 14 amendments proposed primarily by the BJP and its allies, it rejected all 44 amendments offered by the opposition, leading to accusations of undemocratic procedures.
Key changes approved include extending the timeframe for Waqf property registration on a government portal, replacing district collectors with higher-ranking state officials as arbiters in land disputes, and mandating a Waqf tribunal member with expertise in Muslim law.
The opposition strongly criticized the JCP chairman, alleging autocratic behavior and a lack of transparency. They claimed their amendments, aimed at protecting the rights of Waqf properties, were ignored despite widespread stakeholder opposition to the bill. Opposition members walked out of the meeting after the vote, calling the proceedings a “farce”. They cited a lack of access to meeting minutes and a refusal to allow proper clause-by-clause discussion.
The JCP chairman, Jagdambika Pal, defended the process, stating that the amendments were rejected due to insufficient support within the committee. He maintained that the approved changes would benefit poor and Pasmanda Muslims.
The bill, as amended, now faces final parliamentary consideration. The contentious nature of the amendments and the opposition’s strong protest raise concerns about the bill’s potential impact on Waqf properties and the rights of minority communities.
