Wed Jan 29 07:48:05 UTC 2025: ## Uttarakhand Becomes First Indian State to Implement Uniform Civil Code
**Dehradun, [Date]** – Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), marking a significant step in the country’s legal landscape. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami announced the rollout today, nearly a year after the Uttarakhand Assembly passed the UCC Bill, 2024. The Chief Minister also launched a detailed rules manual and an online portal for applications under the new code.
The UCC encompasses several key provisions, including mandatory registration of live-in relationships within one month of commencement, regulation of contract marriages, and a ban on practices such as polygamy, “halal,” and “iddah.” The code also establishes equal inheritance rights for men and women. Significantly, the UCC applies to Uttarakhand residents regardless of their current location, with the exception of Scheduled Tribes.
One of the most striking aspects of the new law is the compulsory registration of live-in relationships. Failure to register within the stipulated timeframe could result in imprisonment, fines, or both.
The President of India, Droupadi Murmu, gave her assent to the Uttarakhand UCC Bill in March of last year. The implementation of the code is expected to generate considerable debate and discussion across the country.
