Wed Jan 29 02:02:17 IST 2025: ## Uttarakhand Becomes First State to Implement Uniform Civil Code
**Dehradun, Uttarakhand:** Uttarakhand has become the first state in India to implement a Uniform Civil Code (UCC), marking a significant milestone in the country’s legal landscape. Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami launched a dedicated UCC portal (ucc.uk.gov.in) and accompanying regulations today. The UCC, excluding scheduled tribes, applies to all residents of Uttarakhand, including those residing outside the state.
The launch event saw the first registrations under the new code, with Nikita Negi Rawat becoming the first person to register a marriage under the UCC. Several others followed suit. For the first six months, registration will be free of charge and can be completed online. A help desk and district-level officials are available to assist citizens.
A key provision of the UCC mandates registration for those in live-in relationships within one month. Marriage registration is mandatory within seven days; otherwise, the marriage will be deemed invalid.
The implementation of the UCC, achieved after three years of effort, aims to establish a uniform legal framework for all citizens regardless of caste, religion, or gender. January 27th will be observed annually as Uniform Civil Code Day.
