**Dehradun, [Date]:** Prime Minister Narendra Modi today praised Uttarakhand’s implementation of the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), calling it a “historic step” reflecting the same team spirit found in sports. Speaking at the inauguration of the 38th National Games in Dehradun, he stated that the UCC, enacted on Monday, is inclusive and does not discriminate. The law aims to standardize personal laws relating to marriage, divorce, inheritance, and live-in relationships for all residents, excluding Scheduled Tribes and other constitutionally protected groups, and prohibits polygamy and child marriage.
Modi also used the platform to reiterate India’s strong bid for the 2036 Olympic Games, highlighting the potential for significant infrastructural development and economic benefits. He emphasized the Games’ ability to boost various sectors, including tourism, while creating better sporting facilities and enhancing India’s global standing. While acknowledging competition from countries like Qatar and Saudi Arabia, he expressed confidence in India’s bid.
The Prime Minister further emphasized the government’s commitment to fostering a strong sporting ecosystem in India. He highlighted initiatives like the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS) and Khelo India, along with a threefold increase in the sports budget, to support athletes’ development. He also encouraged a healthier lifestyle among the youth, urging them to reduce oil consumption and increase physical activity to combat obesity. The National Games, Modi added, serve as a celebration of India’s unity in diversity, embodying the spirit of “Ek Bharat, Shreshtha Bharat.”
