Wed Jan 29 05:30:00 UTC 2025: ## Aussie Spinner Kuhnemann Recovers, Ready for Sri Lanka Tests

**Galle, Sri Lanka** – Australian spinner Matthew Kuhnemann has overcome a significant injury setback to join the national team in Galle and participate in a full training session, boosting Australia’s chances in the upcoming two-Test series against Sri Lanka.

Kuhnemann suffered a dislocated and fractured right thumb while fielding during the Big Bash League. Initially believing the injury was minor, similar to a previous thumb injury he sustained years ago, he opted for surgery after realizing the severity of the fracture. The surgery involved inserting two metal pins into the thumb, raising concerns about his availability for the Sri Lanka tour. He missed the team’s pre-tour training camp in Dubai but arrived in Galle on Friday.

Despite the recent surgery, Kuhnemann participated fully in Sunday’s training session, sporting only a protective guard on his thumb. He reported feeling pain-free and unrestricted in his movements, stating that batting had been easier than expected, and the only difficulty he faces is keeping the surgical wound dry.

Kuhnemann’s presence is crucial for Australia, as left-arm orthodox spin bowling has historically proven highly effective at Galle. His absence would have likely led to the inclusion of uncapped all-rounder Cooper Connolly. His impressive Test record, including a five-wicket haul in India last year, further underlines his importance to the team.

Australian batsman Usman Khawaja praised Kuhnemann’s skill and accuracy, comparing him favorably to former Australian spinner Steve O’Keefe, a master of spin bowling in subcontinental conditions. Kuhnemann himself has been studying footage of Sri Lankan spin legends Rangana Herath and Prabath Jayasuriya to further hone his skills on the challenging pitches.

Despite a lack of first-class cricket since December, Kuhnemann believes the variations he employed in the Big Bash League will benefit his performance in the Test matches. The team’s main training session before the first Test, scheduled for January 29th, will take place on Monday.
