**Washington, D.C.** – The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is distributing up to $2.4 billion in unclaimed stimulus payments to eligible taxpayers who did not claim the Recovery Rebate Credit on their 2021 tax returns. Payments, which began in December and will continue through late January, could reach up to $1,400 per individual.
The IRS discovered that many eligible taxpayers failed to claim the credit, which is designed to compensate individuals who did not receive previous Economic Impact Payments (stimulus checks). Taxpayers who left the Recovery Rebate Credit field blank or entered $0 on their 2021 tax returns are likely eligible for this additional payment.
No action is required from eligible taxpayers to receive the funds. The IRS is automatically sending payments via direct deposit or mail. Recipients will receive a notification letter.
Those who did not file a 2021 tax return but are eligible can still claim the credit by filing their return by the April 15th tax deadline.
