Wed Jan 29 10:17:59 UTC 2025: ## Aussie Captain Smith Joins Elite 10,000 Test Run Club
**Galle, Sri Lanka:** Australian captain Steve Smith etched his name into cricketing history on Thursday, becoming only the fourth Australian batsman to reach 10,000 Test runs. Smith achieved the milestone on the very first ball he faced in the first Test against Sri Lanka, gracefully guiding a run off Prabath Jayasuriya to reach the coveted landmark.
The achievement is particularly sweet for Smith, who narrowly missed the milestone earlier this month during a home Test against India, finishing on 9,999 runs. This remarkable feat surpasses even the accomplishments of Virat Kohli, who currently sits at 9230 runs in 123 Tests.
Smith’s entry into the 10,000 Test run club places him alongside cricketing legends. Sunil Gavaskar was the first to achieve this feat in 1987, while Sachin Tendulkar holds the overall record with 15,921 runs. Smith now joins an exclusive group of Australians, following in the footsteps of other greats.
The jubilant moment was celebrated by Smith and his teammate Usman Khawaja, as the crowd erupted in cheers witnessing this historic achievement. Smith’s captaincy and batting prowess are currently on display in the ongoing Sri Lanka series.
