**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh –** A stampede-like situation at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on Mauni Amavasya, the holiest day of the festival, has resulted in numerous feared deaths and over 30 injuries. The incident occurred as millions of pilgrims converged on the Sangam, the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers, considered sacred by Hindus.
The chaos erupted when barricades approximately a kilometer from the Sangam broke, causing a crush of devotees. Several women fainted, triggering a stampede as panicked pilgrims struggled to avoid the falling individuals. “Suddenly there was pushing in the crowd, and we got trapped. A lot of us fell down and the crowd went uncontrolled,” one devotee recounted to PTI, describing the harrowing experience. Another described the scene as having “nowhere to go” as their child was injured in the chaos.
In response to the tragedy, the Akharas (religious orders) cancelled their traditional ‘Amrit Snan’ (holy dip) ceremony for Mauni Amavasya. However, millions of other pilgrims continued to bathe at the Sangam and other ghats.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi spoke with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, directing immediate support measures for those affected. The Maha Kumbh, held every 12 years, began on January 13th and continues until February 26th. Over 20 crore (200 million) pilgrims have already participated in the event, which is considered the world’s largest spiritual gathering. Authorities are currently assessing the full extent of the casualties.
