Tue Jan 28 11:01:25 UTC 2025: ## Serbian Prime Minister Resigns Amidst Anti-Corruption Protests

BELGRADE, Serbia (January 28, 2025) – Serbian Prime Minister Milos Vucevic announced his resignation today, citing a need to de-escalate widespread anti-corruption protests sparked by the deadly collapse of a concrete canopy in Novi Sad last November. The collapse killed 15 people, fueling public anger over alleged government corruption and autocratic rule under President Aleksandar Vucic.

The protests, which have included daily traffic blockades and a recent 24-hour blockade of a major Belgrade intersection, have seen tens of thousands participate, demanding accountability for the tragedy. Students have been at the forefront of the demonstrations, demanding justice and transparency. The release of former Construction Minister Goran Vesic from detention further fueled suspicions about the independence of the investigation, despite charges being filed against 13 individuals, including a government minister and several state officials.

Mr. Vucevic’s resignation follows an attack on a female student allegedly by members of the ruling Serbian Progressive Party. He stated that his resignation aims to encourage dialogue and calm tensions. Novi Sad Mayor Milan Djuric also resigned today.

The resignation will likely trigger an early parliamentary election. Parliament has 30 days to appoint a new government or call for snap elections. While President Vucic, Mr. Vucevic, and Parliament Speaker Ana Brnabic called for dialogue on Monday, the ongoing protests highlight deep-seated public frustration with the government’s handling of the tragedy and broader concerns about democratic freedoms. The incident has also drawn attention to a recent infrastructure deal with Chinese state companies involving renovations to the Novi Sad railway station.
