PARK CITY, UT – Celebrated director Quentin Tarantino has declared that the cinematic experience as he knows it is over, claiming that 2019 marked the death of movies. Speaking at the Sundance Film Festival, Tarantino expressed his frustration with the current state of film distribution, citing the rapid shift to streaming services as the culprit.

“What the f—k is a movie now?” Tarantino reportedly asked, criticizing the short theatrical windows followed by immediate streaming availability. He lamented the diminished returns for filmmakers and the devaluation of the theatrical experience, stating that the current model is a “show pony exercise.”

Tarantino, whose last film was 2019’s *Once Upon a Time… in Hollywood*, highlighted the contrast between the immersive experience of watching a film on a large screen in a dark theater and the convenience (and diminished quality, in his opinion) of home viewing. He used the example of wanting to see *Nosferatu* but ultimately opting to watch it at home due to the short theatrical run.

While expressing his disappointment, Tarantino didn’t rule out making another film. He has previously stated his intention to make only ten feature films, and his next project would be his tenth. His current focus is on writing a play. However, his strong words paint a bleak picture of the future of cinema, at least from his perspective.
