Tue Jan 28 17:04:15 UTC 2025: ## Kinshasa Embassies Attacked Amidst DRC Conflict

**KINSHASA, DRC –** Protests over the ongoing conflict in eastern Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) escalated Tuesday as demonstrators attacked several foreign embassies in the capital, Kinshasa. The embassies of France, Belgium, Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya, and the United States were targeted, with the French embassy sustaining a fire that was later extinguished.

Protesters, angered by what they perceive as international inaction and complicity in the M23 rebel group’s offensive, blamed several countries for allegedly supporting the rebels. Rwanda, specifically, is accused of backing the M23, a claim it consistently denies.

The attacks resulted in significant damage, with reports of looting and property destruction. Police deployed tear gas to disperse the crowds, who also engaged in clashes and burned tires. Several government officials condemned the violence. France’s foreign minister called the attack on its embassy “unacceptable,” while Kenya’s Cabinet Secretary for Foreign and Diaspora Affairs described the actions as a “grave violation of international law.” DRC’s Communications Minister urged protesters to demonstrate peacefully.

The M23 rebel group, composed of Tutsi fighters, claimed responsibility for taking control of Goma, the largest city in North Kivu province, on Monday. The fighting has resulted in at least 17 UN peacekeepers’ deaths, including three South Africans killed in an attack on Goma airport. Hospitals are reportedly overwhelmed with casualties.

The conflict involves numerous armed groups vying for control of mineral resources in eastern DRC. The UN and several countries believe Rwanda supports the M23, a claim Rwanda denies. Al Jazeera reported that many in the DRC believe Rwanda and Uganda have fueled the conflict.

The UN Security Council is scheduled to meet to address the escalating conflict and humanitarian crisis.
