Wed Jan 29 18:11:52 UTC 2025: ## 30 Dead in Maha Kumbh Stampede; Barriers Fail to Contain Pre-Dawn Crowd

**Prayagraj, India** – A pre-dawn stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, has claimed the lives of 30 people, police confirmed Wednesday. The incident occurred at the Sangam confluence, where millions gather for a holy dip during the month-long religious festival.

According to Deputy Inspector General Vaibhav Krishna, the tragedy resulted from a large crowd gathering before the designated time for the ritual bath (Brahma Muhurta). This overwhelming number of people overwhelmed the barricades, causing a surge that trampled devotees waiting to enter the bathing area.

While police attribute the stampede to the premature gathering and subsequent barrier breach, grieving families contest this account. Jagvanti, whose mother and sister-in-law perished in the crush, stated that the tragedy could have been avoided had authorities opened the barriers earlier to manage the growing crowd. She alleges a lack of timely intervention and assistance during the chaos.

Following the stampede, 90 individuals were hospitalized, with 36 still receiving treatment at a local medical college. Authorities have identified 25 of the 30 deceased, while the identities of the remaining five – four from Karnataka, one from Assam, and one from Gujarat – remain unconfirmed. The incident highlights concerns about crowd management at the massive religious gathering.
