Wed Jan 29 19:23:40 IST 2025: ## Former IAS Officer P.M. Belliappa Passes Away at 89
**Chennai, January 29, 2025** – P.M. Belliappa, a retired Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer of the Tamil Nadu cadre, passed away in Chennai on Wednesday at the age of 89 due to age-related illness. Belliappa, who hailed from Karnataka, had a distinguished career spanning over three decades.
After completing postgraduate studies in Economics and a law degree, he joined the IAS in May 1958. His career included significant roles in both state and central governments. These positions ranged from North Arcot Collector to Director of the Tamil Nadu State Transport Department, Registrar of Co-operative Societies, and Director in various Union Ministries (Industries and Supplies, Science and Technology, and Energy). He also served as the Chairman of the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB) and Agricultural Production Commissioner. He retired from service in October 1993.
Belliappa’s contributions were recognized internationally. In 2011, the British High Commission awarded him the ‘Most Excellent Order of the British Empire’ for his role in strengthening Indo-UK relations and his commitment to environmental protection. He also served as president of the Association of British Scholars.
Following his retirement, Belliappa remained active in social causes, particularly focusing on education and youth empowerment. He is remembered fondly by his colleagues at TNPCB and established the Pemanda Monappa Scholarship fund at Cambridge University in memory of his father. He is survived by his daughter, Sunitha Chinappa, and two grandchildren.
