Wed Jan 29 17:18:38 UTC 2025: ## India’s Rooftop Solar Scheme Sees Slow Start, But Minister Predicts Target Achievement

**NEW DELHI, January 29, 2025** – Despite a slow initial rollout, India’s ambitious ₹75,000 crore PM Surya Ghar rooftop solar scheme is on track to meet its target, according to Union Minister for New and Renewable Energy, Pralhad Joshi. While only 8.5 lakh households have installed rooftop solar connections nearly a year after the scheme’s launch, Joshi expressed confidence that the goal of one crore installations will be achieved within the next two to three years.

The scheme, launched in February 2024, has faced criticism for its slow pace. A Parliamentary Standing Committee on Energy noted that only five lakh installations had been completed by October 2024, out of 20 lakh applications. While acknowledging initial delays attributed to factors like rain, the Ministry reported a significant increase in daily installations, from 3,000 to 9,000. The scheme offers substantial subsidies, covering 60% of costs for systems up to 2 kW and 40% for systems between 2 kW and 3 kW.

Speaking at the India Energy Transition Conference, Joshi highlighted India’s broader renewable energy progress. He cited a 200% increase in installed renewable capacity over the last 10 years, reaching 220 GW, and an 80% drop in solar power tariffs. He also reiterated the government’s aim to add 50 GW of new renewable capacity annually in the coming years.
