Wed Jan 29 04:01:51 UTC 2025: ## Neymar Returns to Santos After Short, Injury-Plagued Stint in Saudi Arabia
**RIO DE JANEIRO (AP)** — Brazilian soccer superstar Neymar is returning to his boyhood club, Santos, after mutually terminating his contract with Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, club president Marcelo Teixeira announced Tuesday. The move comes after a brief and injury-ridden spell in Saudi Arabia, where Neymar played only seven matches in 17 months due to an ACL injury sustained while playing for Brazil in October 2023.
Neymar, who became the world’s most expensive player in 2017 when he transferred to PSG for €222 million, joined Al-Hilal last August for €90 million. His time in Saudi Arabia was marked by the injury and subsequent uncertainty about his future. While Al-Hilal won the Saudi league last season, Neymar’s contributions were limited.
His return to Santos has been met with enthusiasm. Teixeira expressed joy at Neymar’s homecoming, welcoming him “back to your people, to our home.” A video of Neymar giving a farewell speech to his Al-Hilal teammates circulated online, where he expressed happiness to be returning home to his country. Kely Nascimento, daughter of the late Pelé, also celebrated the news on social media.
Neymar previously played for Santos from 2003-2013, winning six titles including the Copa Libertadores in 2011. Santos was relegated to Brazil’s second division in 2023 but has since been promoted. Neymar’s spokeswoman declined to comment, but Neymar himself responded to Nascimento’s post with a heart GIF. The striker is expected to return to Brazil this week.
While Neymar’s injury hampered his time in Saudi Arabia, he remains focused on regaining fitness and playing time ahead of the 2026 World Cup, which could be his last opportunity to win the coveted trophy. His return to Santos marks a significant chapter in his career, bringing him back to the club where he first rose to prominence.
