Wed Jan 29 08:13:01 UTC 2025: **Mauni Amavasya 2025: Millions Expected Despite Tragedy at Prayagraj Kumbh Mela**
Prayagraj, India – Mauni Amavasya, a significant Hindu festival observed on the new moon day of the Magha month, falls on January 29th, 2025. This year, the auspicious day coincides with the Prayagraj Kumbh Mela, leading to heightened religious significance but also tragedy.
The auspicious timings for rituals, according to the Vedic calendar, include an Amrit Snana (holy bath) period from 5:25 AM to 6:18 AM and a Pratah Sandhya Muhurt (morning twilight) from 5:51 AM to 7:11 AM on January 29th. Devotees typically observe silence and perform charitable acts, including bathing in sacred waters and donating to the needy. Many believe that performing specific rituals on this day can alleviate the effects of Kal Sarpa Dosha (an astrological affliction) or appease ancestors.
However, the Kumbh Mela was marred by a stampede resulting in multiple fatalities and over 50 injuries. In response to the incident, thirteen Akharas (religious orders) have cancelled their Amrit Snana ceremonies. Prime Minister Modi has contacted Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to receive updates on the situation. The tragedy is attributed to a barrier collapse. Mahamandaleshwar Premanand Puri expressed concern over the lack of army deployment for security. Despite the tragedy, authorities still anticipate approximately 10 million pilgrims for the festival.
