Wed Jan 29 02:02:16 IST 2025: ## Millions Descend on Prayagraj for Maha Kumbh’s “Amrit Snan”

**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, January 28, 2025** – The Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj is bracing for its most significant event, the “Amrit Snan,” on Mauni Amavasya (January 29th), with an expected 100 million pilgrims anticipated. Authorities have implemented unprecedented security measures, including the deployment of numerous personnel, AI-powered CCTV cameras, and drones to monitor the vast Mela area.

Over 150 million pilgrims have already participated in the holy dip in the Sangam (confluence of the Ganges, Yamuna, and mythical Saraswati rivers) during the first 17 days of the Kumbh Mela, which began on January 13th and runs until February 26th. The Uttar Pradesh government expects a total of 400-450 million pilgrims throughout the festival.

The “Amrit Snan,” considered the holiest ritual of the Maha Kumbh, is expected to draw massive crowds. On Makar Sankranti (January 14th), 35 million devotees participated. To manage the influx, Prayagraj schools will be closed from January 28th to 30th, and the Allahabad High Court has declared a holiday on Mauni Amavasya. The administration has urged residents to use two-wheelers or walk to facilitate pilgrim movement, with the Mela area designated a no-vehicle zone for several days.

Concerns have been raised about exorbitant airfares from cities like Hyderabad to Prayagraj, ranging from ₹28,000 to ₹1.02 lakh. The central government has requested airlines to increase flights to the city, and the Vishva Hindu Parishad (VHP) has called for government intervention to address the high airfare issue.

The celebration will culminate in a spectacular flower petal shower from helicopters at 6:45 am on Wednesday. The Uttar Pradesh government has emphasized its commitment to ensuring a smooth and safe pilgrimage for devotees from across the globe.
