Wed Jan 29 19:31:40 IST 2025: ## Mahakumbh Stampede Leaves Over 30 Dead, Dozens Injured
**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, India** – A stampede at the Mahakumbh Mela in Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, on Wednesday resulted in the deaths of over 30 people and injuries to at least 60 others, according to Mahakumbh DIG Vaibhav Krishna. The incident occurred at the Triveni Sangam, a confluence of three sacred rivers, during the Mauni Amavasya, a day of significant religious importance.
The stampede reportedly started around 2:30 am as large crowds gathered for a holy dip. Eyewitnesses described chaos and overcrowding, with pilgrims carrying luggage losing their footing amidst numerous unseen dustbins. The resulting crush led to injuries and fatalities. One eyewitness recounted falling and helping others, observing panicked young people pushing others in the crowd.
Following the incident, the Uttar Pradesh government activated a helpline (1920) to assist those searching for missing loved ones. Authorities have identified 25 victims, with efforts underway to identify the remaining deceased. The injured are receiving medical treatment, with officials reporting no critical cases.
The incident prompted swift responses from top officials. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah contacted Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath to assess the situation and offer support. The Chief Minister stated that the situation was under control, although the crowd remains substantial, and urged devotees to bathe at nearby ghats rather than crowding the Sangam. He also confirmed that the Akharas (religious orders) agreed to postpone their traditional ‘Amrit Snan’ to allow for a less crowded environment.
Opposition parties criticized the government’s handling of the event. The Congress and Samajwadi Party blamed inadequate arrangements, a focus on VIP movements, and mismanagement for the tragedy. Akhilesh Yadav, the Samajwadi Party chief, even called for the event’s management to be handed over to the Indian Army.
While the initial reports spoke of a “stampede,” some officials, including the SSP Kumbh Mela, described the situation as severe overcrowding, leading to injuries. Regardless of the precise terminology, the tragedy highlights concerns about crowd control and safety measures at large-scale religious gatherings. The investigation into the cause of the incident is ongoing. The Kumbh Mela, one of the world’s largest religious gatherings, continues, with over 5.71 crore people having taken a holy dip by the evening. However, the somber mood prevails in the wake of the devastating losses.
