**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh:** A stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya left dozens injured near the Sangam confluence. Ambulances rushed the injured to the Kumbh Mela central hospital, where many were treated while some with serious injuries were referred to higher centers.
While officials, including OSD Akanksha Rana, claimed no injuries were serious, a steady stream of casualties continued to arrive at the overwhelmed hospital, which has been effectively converted into a makeshift field hospital. Media access to the hospital was restricted.
Opposition leaders strongly criticized the handling of the event. Congress leader Surendra Rajput blamed inadequate arrangements, while former UP Congress president Ajay Kumar Lallu expressed condolences to the victims’ families and questioned the government’s prioritization of VIP movements over the safety of pilgrims. He cited a recent fire incident at the Mela as evidence of insufficient preparedness. Rahul Gandhi also expressed his condolences and criticized the administration for prioritizing VIP movements over the safety and well-being of pilgrims.
Authorities responded to the growing crowds by diverting traffic at Fatehpur border, deploying police and army personnel to manage the influx of devotees. The administration is on high alert, diverting vehicles from surrounding areas to prevent further overcrowding in Prayagraj. Meetings between officials and religious leaders were also reported. The incident raises concerns about crowd management and safety measures as the Kumbh Mela continues.
