**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh:** A stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj on the occasion of Mauni Amavasya left dozens injured on [Date of incident]. The incident occurred near the Sangam confluence due to overcrowding, according to OSD Akanksha Rana. While Rana claimed no injuries were critical, a steady stream of casualties continued to arrive at the Kumbh Mela’s central hospital, which has been overwhelmed. Many seriously injured individuals were referred to higher-level medical facilities. Media access to the hospital was restricted.
The incident delayed the traditional amrit snan procession of the Nirnjani and Anand Akharas. The Mahanirvani and Atal Akharas, traditionally first in the procession, initially refused to proceed due to concerns following the stampede, but the administration persuaded them to participate. The Mahanirvani Akhara later began its procession.
BJP National President JP Nadda expressed his condolences to the victims’ families and wished a speedy recovery to the injured. He stated he was in constant contact with Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath and local administration, ensuring all necessary healthcare facilities were available. BJP workers are assisting in relief and rescue efforts.
SSP Rajesh Dwivedi refuted claims of a stampede, attributing the injuries to overcrowding. He urged pilgrims to use the less crowded ghats and assured that the amrit snan would proceed peacefully. He emphasized that several ghats had been developed to facilitate smoother bathing.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi, while campaigning for the Delhi Assembly elections, also expressed his sorrow over the incident and stated his continued contact with the Uttar Pradesh government.
