Tue Jan 28 23:59:30 UTC 2025: ## Maha Kumbh Stampede Leaves Multiple Injured on Mauni Amavasya
**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh, January 29, 2025** – A stampede-like situation at the Sangam confluence in Prayagraj during the ongoing Maha Kumbh Mela has resulted in multiple injuries. The incident occurred on Wednesday, January 29th, during the Mauni Amavasya, a highly significant day for pilgrims participating in the holy bath. This year’s event held added significance due to a rare “Triveni Yog” celestial alignment, occurring for the first time in 144 years, drawing an exceptionally large crowd.
Officials reported a barrier breaking at the Sangam, leading to the crush. While the exact number of casualties is still being ascertained, injured pilgrims were transported to the central hospital established within the Mela area. Senior administrative and police officials are present at the hospital, along with relatives of the injured.
Akanksha Rana, Officer on Special Duty for the Mela, confirmed injuries and hospitalizations, stating that the exact number of those affected is yet to be determined. Mauni Amavasya’s Amrit Snan ritual is the most important event of the Maha Kumbh, typically drawing an estimated 10 crore pilgrims. The unusually large turnout this year, amplified by the rare celestial alignment, likely contributed to the incident. Investigations into the cause of the stampede are underway.
