**Prayagraj, Uttar Pradesh –** A stampede at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj, India, during the early hours of Wednesday left at least 30 women injured and sparked fears of further casualties. The incident occurred ahead of the “Amrit Snan” ritual on Mauni Amavasya, a significant day for Hindu pilgrims. A massive influx of devotees seeking a holy bath at the Sangam confluence overwhelmed the area, resulting in the stampede.
The injured are receiving treatment at a central hospital within the Mela area. While official death tolls have yet to be released, concerns remain high.
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath addressed the media, stating that the situation is under control, although crowd pressure persists. He urged pilgrims to bathe at less congested ghats rather than concentrating on the Sangam Nose and appealed to the public to disregard any circulating rumors.
Despite the Uttar Pradesh government’s preparations – anticipating 100 million pilgrims and deploying increased security – the sheer volume of devotees on Mauni Amavasya proved overwhelming.
**Helpline Numbers:** The government has released several helpline numbers for assistance: Maha Kumbh Helpline: 1920; Mela Police Helpline: 1944; Fire Services: 1945; Food and Supplies: 1010; Ambulance: 102/108. Further updates are expected.
