**Prayagraj, India** – The Indian Railways is deploying an unprecedented number of trains to manage the massive influx of pilgrims expected for the Mauni Amavasya ‘Amrit Snan’ at the Maha Kumbh Mela in Prayagraj. A total of 360 trains, including 190 special services, are operating across the Northern, North Eastern, and North Central Railway zones. This translates to a train departing every four minutes to ensure seamless transport for the estimated 10 crore pilgrims anticipated for Wednesday’s auspicious event.
Railway Board Chairman and CEO Satish Kumar announced the massive operation, highlighting a ₹5,000 crore investment in infrastructure upgrades around Prayagraj to support the Kumbh Mela. This investment includes new road overbridges and underbridges, track doubling, and station improvements designed to alleviate congestion.
To improve passenger amenities, the railways has added new toilets, drinking water facilities, and food courts at every Prayagraj station. First aid booths and medical observation rooms are also available, along with Yatri Suvidha Kendras at Prayagraj Junction and Prayagraj Chheoki offering assistance with wheelchairs, luggage, bookings, and essential supplies. Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel are deployed for passenger safety and assistance with boarding and deboarding. Color-coded tickets and designated holding areas, such as the Khusro Bagh (with a capacity of 1 lakh passengers), further streamline the process. The holding areas provide food and multilingual information displays.
Kumar praised the collaborative effort with the Uttar Pradesh government, noting their joint establishment of these passenger holding areas. The extensive railway operation aims to ensure a smooth and comfortable pilgrimage experience for millions of devotees.
