Wed Jan 29 10:21:48 UTC 2025: ## Chennai Metro Construction Prompts Relocaton of KMC Hospital’s CEmONC Centre
**Chennai, January 29, 2025** – The Government Kilpauk Medical College (KMC) Hospital’s 200-bed Comprehensive Emergency Obstetric and Newborn Care (CEmONC) centre is being relocated to a newly constructed six-storey building due to upcoming Chennai Metro Rail tunneling work.
Tamil Nadu Health Minister Ma. Subramanian announced the move Wednesday, following an inspection of the new ₹362.87 crore building, funded partly by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The new building, which will begin housing the CEmONC center this week, also features 16 operation theatres, including a hybrid OT, and a total bed strength of 468. Other KMC departments will be moved to the new facility in phases.
The Minister explained that the metro’s tunneling work, passing 27 meters below the existing CEmONC building, necessitated the relocation as a precautionary measure requested by Chennai Metro Rail Limited to ensure hospital operations remain unaffected.
The new building is part of a larger JICA-funded project encompassing seven locations across Tamil Nadu, with a total investment of ₹1,634 crore. Furthermore, the Minister revealed plans for 25 new hospitals – 19 District Headquarters Hospitals and six equivalent facilities – with ₹1,018 crore allocated for completion within three months.
