Bengaluru, India – The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) marked a historic milestone on Wednesday, successfully completing its 100th space mission. The agency announced ambitious plans to launch another 100 missions within the next five years.

ISRO’s journey began in 1979 with the Satellite Launch Vehicle (SLV). In just 46 years, it has achieved this remarkable feat, largely driven by the success of its Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV). The PSLV, described as ISRO’s “trusted workhorse,” has completed 62 missions, showcasing its exceptional reliability and precision in deploying satellites into various orbits. Other key contributors include the Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV) with 17 missions, the LVM3 (7 missions), and the SSLV (3 missions).

The PSLV’s success is highlighted by its role in launching crucial missions such as Chandrayaan-1 and the Mars Orbiter Mission. Its versatility is evident in its ability to launch satellites into low Earth orbits, geostationary orbits, and geosynchronous orbits.

While the GSLV initially faced challenges, earning the playful moniker “naughty boy,” recent successful launches demonstrate its improved performance. ISRO’s two launch pads at the Sriharikota spaceport have been instrumental in facilitating these achievements.

This centennial mission marks not just an achievement, but a testament to ISRO’s growing capabilities and its commitment to furthering India’s space exploration endeavors. The agency’s ambitious plan for the next five years promises further advancements in India’s space program.
