**Mangaluru, Karnataka, January 29, 2025** – The Mangaluru Chapter of INTACH (Indian National Trust for Art and Cultural Heritage) and Art Kanara Trust marked International Day of Education with a compelling dialogue on the state of basic education in India. The event featured experimental educationist Krishna, co-founder of Thulir School in Tamil Nadu.
Krishna, an architect by training, shared his inspiring journey establishing Thulir, a school in the remote Sittilingi valley. Initially an after-school program for tribal, Dalit, and Lambadi children, Thulir evolved into a formal primary school catering to Adivasi children in 2017. Addressing the educational disparities in the region, where the existing government school lacked resources and failed to meet community needs, Thulir provides a unique learning environment focused on student-led exploration and skill development.
Krishna highlighted the crucial role of early childhood education and emphasized the need for elevating the teaching profession in India. He drew a comparison to countries like Finland, where teaching is highly valued and teacher training is rigorous, advocating for similar reforms in India to attract and retain top talent in the field.
The event, attended by INTACH Mangaluru Convener Subhas Chandra Basu and others, underscored the urgent need for improved access to quality education, particularly in underserved rural communities. Krishna’s experience with Thulir School serves as a powerful example of innovative approaches to address the challenges facing basic education in India.
