Wed Jan 29 13:49:49 UTC 2025: ## Delhi NCR Imposes Strict Air Pollution Curbs Amid Severe Air Quality
**New Delhi –** The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) has implemented Stage 3 restrictions of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) in Delhi and the National Capital Region (NCR) due to a sharp deterioration in air quality. A 24-hour average Air Quality Index (AQI) of 365, categorized as “severe,” triggered the action.
The deteriorating air quality is attributed to unfavorable meteorological conditions including calm winds, low mixing height, and smog, coupled with pollutants from vehicle emissions, agricultural burning, and other sources.
Stage 3 restrictions include a ban on non-essential construction and the use of BS-III petrol and BS-IV diesel four-wheelers (with exemptions for persons with disabilities). Non-essential diesel-operated medium goods vehicles with BS-IV or older standards are also banned in Delhi. Schools are required to shift classes up to grade 5 to a hybrid model, offering online learning options.
The GRAP, implemented during winter months, categorizes air quality into four stages, with Stage 3 representing severe air pollution. Authorities warn that these measures are necessary to combat the hazardous air quality levels plaguing the region.
