Tue Jan 28 16:19:21 UTC 2025: ## Louvre Museum to Undergo Multi-Year, Multi-Million Euro Overhaul

**Paris, France –** French President Emmanuel Macron announced a major, multi-year renovation of the Louvre Museum on Tuesday, including the creation of a dedicated room for the Mona Lisa. The overhaul, estimated to cost hundreds of millions of euros, will address overcrowding, outdated facilities, and structural issues threatening the museum’s art collection.

The project, unveiled near the Mona Lisa’s current display, will encompass a new entrance near the River Seine (opening by 2031), the construction of underground rooms, and significant upgrades to existing infrastructure. These are necessary due to issues such as water leaks, temperature fluctuations, and inadequate noise insulation within the existing structure, including the iconic glass pyramid. The museum, currently attracting 8.7 million visitors annually, far exceeds its original design capacity of 4 million.

Louvre Director Laurence des Cars highlighted concerns about the museum’s “obsolescence” in a recent memo to the Culture Minister, emphasizing the need for improved visitor amenities like food and restroom facilities.

The renovation is expected to be complex and costly, mirroring the 262 million euro renovation currently planned for the Pompidou Center. Funding will be a combination of state support and private revenue streams, including ticket sales and partnerships.

Macron’s announcement directly addresses concerns raised by Des Cars regarding the Mona Lisa’s current display. Currently situated in an overcrowded room, the painting’s popularity often overshadows other significant works. The dedicated room aims to improve viewing conditions and alleviate overcrowding. The specific cost of the Louvre renovation has not yet been released.
