**Gaza City, Palestine –** Tens of thousands of Palestinians are making arduous journeys back to their homes in northern Gaza, walking for miles after a ceasefire ended a 15-month war. Many are returning to areas devastated by Israeli attacks, facing the grim reality of destroyed homes and limited services.
For days, a steady stream of people has flowed along al-Rashid Street, carrying meager belongings and exhibiting immense resilience. Among them is Rifaat Jouda, who walked 30 kilometers from southern Gaza with his family, including his adult son who has Down Syndrome. His home in northern Gaza City was destroyed, yet he expressed a renewed sense of hope in the act of returning.
The displacement was a direct result of Israeli evacuation orders early in the conflict, forcing roughly 2.3 million Gazans to flee to what were deemed “safe zones” in central and southern Gaza. These areas, however, suffered significant damage themselves, with estimates ranging from 48% to 55% of buildings destroyed or damaged in southern Gaza. Northern Gaza, particularly Gaza City, experienced even more extensive destruction, with approximately 74% of buildings affected.
Many returnees, like Sami al-Dabbagh and Radwan al-Ajoul, expressed deep regret at ever leaving their northern homes, vowing never to be displaced again. Their stories highlight the profound human cost of the conflict and the enduring impact of displacement on Palestinian families.
The journey back is fraught with hardship. Returnees face exhaustion, lack of essential services, and the painful reality of loss. Khaled Ibrahim, who lost his wife, granddaughter, and two brothers during the war, is returning to Beit Lahiya with his remaining children to rebuild his life. Nada Jahjouh, who has lost two sons in previous conflicts, carries her surviving son and grandson on her return, her joy tempered by immense sorrow.
Despite the immense challenges, the return of thousands to northern Gaza underscores the unwavering determination of Palestinians to rebuild their lives and reclaim their homes, even amidst widespread devastation. The long walk back, many claim, is a symbol of defiance against forced displacement and a testament to the enduring spirit of the Palestinian people.
