DHAKA, Bangladesh (January 29, 2025) – Train services across Bangladesh have resumed after railway workers ended a two-day strike. The indefinite strike, which began on Tuesday, January 28th, brought the nation’s rail network to a complete standstill, causing significant disruption for commuters and businesses.
The strike impacted approximately 400 passenger trains, including over 100 inter-city services, and more than 30 freight trains. Thousands of passengers were stranded and forced to seek alternative, often more expensive, transportation.
The workers, including drivers, ticket checkers, and guards, protested a 2021 government decision eliminating pension benefits for overtime work. Union leader Mujibur Rahman stated that the government has assured them these benefits will be reinstated. Many railway employees routinely worked beyond their scheduled hours, relying on the additional compensation and pension benefits. The removal of these benefits sparked concerns about their financial security in retirement.
With the assurances from the government, the strike has ended and normal train services have been restored.
